Social Security Totalization Agreements

The United States has established a network of bilateral Social Security agreements, often called “totalization agreements”, that  coordinate the U.S. Social Security program with the comparable programs of other countries. These agreements eliminate dual Social Security taxation of a worker from one country who works in another country and address other important issues concerning eligibility and coverage.

As of April 15, 2008, the United States has Social Security totalization agreements with the following countries:

Australia
Austria
Belgium
Canada
Chile
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Ireland
Italy
Japan
Luxembourg
Netherlands
Norway
Portugal
South Korea
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
United Kingdom
